Finding it to be extortionate to carpet your stairs?? Helen over on the Livingetc forum was quoted ridiculous prices so armed with a hand sander , floor paint and a "roll of Orla's best" she set to work on the stairs of her recently renovated house. She painstakingly papered every step and then varnished them with a water based silk varnish intended for heavy traffic, she says they still look as good eight months after finishing it.
